Ramblings from the Shack: 12/04/2007 Print E-mail

My four year-old son has been practicing and improving on writing his alphabet lately and in an effort to keep him from using all of my printer paper I went on the hunt for a chalkboard art easel. We have a small chalkboard already but in the last couple of weeks it has been a battle with his sister about who gets to use it first. I drew a line down the middle of the chalkboard and told them they each had a side to use at the same time.  That trick only worked for a day or two. Oh, who am I kidding? It worked for a few hours. Maybe one.

We made a run to the new Super Target the other day to see what they had to offer. The only chalkboard art easel in the store was a little plastic one that was not much taller than my 22 month-old daughter. And they wanted $50.00 for it! We went back home to look online and found the exact one I was thinking of and lightly used for $25.00. The lady who sold it to me this afternoon wanted to be sure I was OK with it having a few scratches on the chalkboard side that wouldn't come out. Obviously she had never met my children. What she doesn't know is that in the next few months it is totally possible that the art easel will no longer be an art easel but more like a target for toys to be thrown at repeatedly until it falls apart - which is why I was in the market for a used one. I expect their creative minds to find other uses for the easel like they did already today when they made it a party tent for their toys.

The weather here has been very comfortable in the afternoons and that means our trampoline has been getting some good use. They love to bounce around and play games with each other. It is under a large oak tree and nicely shaded from the afternoon sun. I just wish I could stop our dog from taking poops underneath the trampoline. It's not easy to reach the dog poop to scoop it up without falling on your face in another random pile, but apparently the piles under there make wonderful conversation pieces for a couple of kids.

My wife has been going to graduate school at night for the last three years and is almost done! She graduates in less than two weeks. Hooray! She has been working very hard and has enjoyed going to school again. She has mentioned going back for her PhD so she can become a college professor someday. Maybe then I can get a jacket to go with my cool new hat she brought home for me. The benefits of "going steady" right here. Hey, I've carried her books for her!
