For the last week she has been watching her big brother mosey on through the doors of elementary school on his way to 1st Grade. How excited was she to be starting the next week? Very excited, to say the least. She had new Disney Princess sneakers, a new Barbie lunchbox, some new socks, and a big fat smile.
The smile lasted until it was time to go. "I don't want to go to school!" she cried.
"But you have to," I said in a calm voice that could have been interpreted as a nervous plea. "You love your preschool and a lot of your friends are going to be in your class again this year. It's going to be so fun!"
This has been a normal routine at the end of the Summer since the Little Mr. started preschool three years ago. Now it's her turn to give us the business like he did - even if it might turn out to be just one day instead of five...or ten. She was slow moving when it came to brushing her teeth and hair, putting on her shoes, and getting in the car. It was almost as if breakfast was her last meal and the Death Chamber was lurking around the corner awaiting it's next villain.
Reluctantly she went inside to the classroom that just days before she visited to say hello to her new teacher - her brother's teacher the year she was born when I would carry her in her car seat to drop him off and pick him up. She has known this teacher her entire life and loves her.
This was her reaction when it was time for us to go.
When both kids first started preschool I took a lot of photos and even some video. They were big milestones! This morning, that is the only shot I took. The rest would have been me being the paparazzi taking photos of Little Bit having a breakdown, which would have sold for millions on the tabloid market.
I knew she would be fine. Miss Janet had the same reaction from her brother and he loved her class. She just needed for us to go so she could turn on the charm for the entire class and beyond, which we heard while exiting the building. When I say my baby girl has a healthy set of vocal chords to go with her robust lung capacity - I am not pulling your leg.
I get home to a peaceful and quiet house. A house that is not filled with screaming, loud cartoons, the "Super-Duper Ultra Lightweight UFC Matches", uncontrollable giggles, silly faces, goofy dancing...
It was like being in an empty church sanctuary with only the company of white noise from the air-conditioning unit. It was peaceful. It was Heaven.
When I went to pick her up from what she acted like was her Death Chamber, I peeked through the long little window in the door to see her laughing away with her friends as they got their blue ribbons from Miss Janet for having a great first day. She sat down in the line of toddlers by the door, all waiting for their moms or dads to come pick them up and making those silly faces that I missed all morning.
Needless to say, she ran up to me with the biggest smile on her face like every day past the first week last year. She, of course, had a blast! On the way home I asked her what she did on her first day. This is how it went down...
Me: What did you do on your first day of school?
Little Bit: Nothing.
Me: Really? Nothing at all? Did you play with your friends?
LB: No.
Me: So you just sat and stared at the floor?
LB: Yep.
Me: Are you sure or are you pulling my leg?
LB: (laughing) OK, I'm pulling your leg!I played on the playground with my friends but that's it! The rest of the time I sat and stared at the floor.
Me: Did you eat your lunch?
LB: No, I sat and stared at Jossie and Lily. Lily ate my lunch.
Me: Really? Are you sure or did you eat it and you are pulling my leg?
LB: OK, I'm pulling your leg. I ate it! (laughing) But that's all I did! I played on the playground and stared at the floor and stared at Jossie and Lily while we ate our lunch. Cordelia wasn't there today. Presley was there!
Me: Did you read any books today?
LB: Noooo, I can't read yet, silly!
Me: Well, did Miss Janet read you any books?
LB: Yes, but I just stared at the floor.
Me: I find that hard to believe. When I came to pick you up she was reading to you all and handing out blue ribbons and you were definitely not staring at the floor. Are you pulling my leg again?
LB: OK, I am! But that's all I did today. The rest of the time I sat and stared at the floor!
Me: Riiiiight.
LB: Where is my blue ribbon?
Me: it's right here. Let me get a good first day photo of you now that we are home.
LB: OK!
That's my girl!
